A feast for a king, a bullet to his head.

In sunny or stormy weather, the presence of Jesus is all you need to feast.

Psalms 23:5 says: ‘Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve recited this line… who is Dangote? Lol. But seriously, I feel like the beauty of this verse has been lost in the many robotic recitations. The Holy Spirit led me to study this particular Psalms and He opened my eyes to the actual treasure that this verse ( and the whole chapter actually) is. As I came to this verse, the image of James Bond suddenly flashed in my head.

You know how cool and collected Bond is even in the face of danger and literal bullets, that’s the picture I’m talking about! David says, God prepares a table in the presence of his enemies.

Prepares: it is an actual process. God does not abracadabra this; as with most other things with God, this is a build up that refines the believer.
Table: this is not a meal or simple dish, a table (signifying blessings here) is an elaborate course that involves thorough and detailed planning to execute. A table also takes time to set, still signifying the process.
Presence of enemies: this is the sweetest part of this verse for me. It seems to scream, nothing will stop me from blessing you! The presence of the enemy would seem to suggest that we panic or become fearful. You’re thinking of all the ways you could run and hide but God is telling you… chill. God is setting you up right in the midst of all the elements of impossibility so you remember that He is the God of impossibilities.

For King David, who experienced many difficulties during his reign, it must have been beyond incredible that because of God, he could rest and be in peace despite the turmoil around him.

What a wonderful wonder Abba truly is. Abba says that no matter what situation you are in, no matter how close your enemies seem, you CAN feast. You can be deeply at peace. Why? He has conquered the world.

Iโ€™ve told you all this so that trusting me, you will be unshakable and assured, deeply at peace. In this godless world you will continue to experience difficulties. But take heart! Iโ€™ve conquered the world.โ€
John 16:33 (msg)

I hope you see clearly in your mind, a picture of a loving Father who will go lengths to not just save you but exalt you in the presence of your enemies. I hope when you look at the skies and perceive the scent of rain, you remember this God who intelligently created the piece of art called the universe out of nothing. I hope when you go through a seemingly bad situation, you remember to trust God’s love in what He allows and know that He can bring the good out of the bad.

I hope you remember
That you serve a God who will feed you, bountifully,
in front of people who would rather you starve
I hope you never stop being wide-eyed and mystified
at how wonderful Abba is
I hope you never lose your wonder
